About Aktau

Aktau, the entry point into Central Asia by air from the Caucasus and Istanbul or by sea from Baku, is perched on the east coast of the Caspian. With some sandy beaches, decent summer tourism, and a temperate climate (several degrees above freezing in January), this dusty and fairly sprawling city is pleasant enough for a day or two, but the area's main interest is natural wonders and created by the man of the surrounding region, the Mangistau.

History

The urban agglomeration was born thanks to the settlement of the Soviet technicians after important deposits of uranium, as well as gas and oil were discovered in the area. In 1964 the name was changed to Ševčenko (Шевченко in Russian) in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Hryhorovyč Ševčenko, a toponym he kept until the dissolution of the USSR in 1992.
